To create an authentic pattern on this ceramic mask, the naked raku finishing process was used. Naked raku is a variation of the raku technique in which a slip is applied to the mask before it is placed in the raku kiln then cracks and breaks apart during the firing process. After the piece reaches the desired temperature, it is then removed and placed into a reduction chamber where the piece is subjected to dense smoke. Once cooled, the slip is then chipped off to reveal a unique blackened crackle pattern.
